In this new hair diary series we will be taking a look at the common concerns we face when it comes to get rid of split ends.
What are the common causes of split ends?
Split ends are most common with women with long hair. But even when you have short hair, you can still suffer from split ends.
It’s one of the most prominent and common hair problems faced by any and every woman irrespective of age, hair types and the products that you use. People often condense the cause of split hair ends to irregular trimming, but there are other reasons too, which cause split ends.
FACT: Hair usually splits into 2-3 strands and 2-3 centimetres long. Split ends tend to happen not only at the ends of the hair, but anywhere where the hairs are damaged.
Now that you have an understanding for the most common causes of split ends, one of our team members shares her battle, as she tries to search for a solution once and for all.

Facts about my hair
• Long hair
• Blonde (highlighted)
• Naturally straight
• Damaged
I care about having good hair. As it’s long, I don’t want it to look dead and dull.
Hair is one of the first things that people notice about you when you meet them for the first time. First impressions are important to me and I want to feel confident, so having healthy looking hair is a must.
How I take care of my hair
• I wash my hair a maximum of 3 times (to avoid stripping the hair of its natural oils)
• I use a hair mask (Macadamia Deep Repair Hair Masque). I leave it on for 5 minutes each time. My hair always feels super soft after using this masque. I love it!
• I use an ends sealer cream before drying.
• I only use a hair dryer and never straighteners because it causes a lot of damage to hair (especially long hair).
• I take collagen and horsetail supplements to keep my hair healthy and to ensure that it grows.
• I visit the hairdressers on average every 3.5 months.
• I don’t really use hair bands as they can cut the hair. Only on occasions when I am visiting the gym (2-3 times a week) do I use hairbands. If it’s particularly hot, I loosely clip my hair instead.
What I should try to get rid of split ends
So as you can see from the above list, I really do try to take care of my hair but I still suffer from split ends. I have been looking into other solutions for getting rid of my split ends because what I have tried so far hasn’t fully worked.
I am currently working my way through the below to see if it makes much of a difference to the condition of my hair. Fingers crossed!
Deep conditioning with coconut oil, as it’s very nourishing for the hair:

Use a leave-in conditioner:

RECOMMENDED: Repair Soothe Herbal Conditioner from Fushi
Always remember to use an alcohol free shampoo:
Reasons why you should use an alcohol free shampoo:
• Hydrates your hair (alcohol based products can dry your hair out which can lead to split ends and dandruff)
• Your scalp will be less irritated due to harsh chemicals that are used in many shampoos today
• Promotes healthy hair the natural way
Use a honey rinse
Reasons why you should use a honey rinse for your hair:
• Hydrates your hair, leaving it super smooth and shiny without drying it out
• Reduces hair frizziness
Things to avoid when treating split ends
• Stay away from harsh chemicals. This can damage your hair, leaving it dry and brittle
• Avoid colouring (if you can) as this strips the hair of its natural oils
• Protect your hair from the sun. The sun can be detrimental to your hair’s health. Leaving it dry, frizzy and dead
• Protect your hair from the pool and the sea. Especially pools as they contain chlorine which really isn’t good for your hair’s health
• Hard water is the enemy for your hair (water with high concentrations of calcium) strips your hair of its natural oils leaving it dry and prone to dead, split ends.
