The term ‘dad bod’ was virtually absent from conversations until 30th April 2015, when a 19-year-old student from America penned a story titled ‘Why girls love the Dad Bod.’
Her argument was counter-intuitive, suggesting that women are more attracted to men whose physiques reflect “a nice balance between beer gut and working out” than they are to hunks with washboard abs.
But, somehow, the idea caught on, and the story quickly began to go viral. Are you a dad bod?
The dad bod explained
The dad bod says ‘I go to the gym occasionally, but I also drink heavily on weekends and enjoy eating eight slices of pizza at a time.’ It isn’t an overweight guy but it isn’t one with washboard abs either.
So muscles and a bit of a beer gut is basically what a dad bod is! GQ has even published a dad bod diet, which consists of lots of pizza and carbs. Delicious!

What is so special about the dad bod?
The dad bod is a new trend and guys everywhere seem to be rejoicing. It turns out skipping the gym for a few beers shouldn’t mean you should feel guilty at all, quite the opposite in fact! While most girls love a sculpted guy, there is just something about the dad bod that makes guys seem more natural and attractive.
Here are a few reasons that girls are crazy about the dad bod….
1. The dad bod doesn’t intimidate women
Few things are worse for a girl than taking a picture in a bikini next to a guy who is crazy fit. Girls don’t want guys to make them feel anymore insecure about their body than they already do. Women don’t need a perfectly sculpted guy standing next to them.
2. Girls know what they are getting
Girls tend to picture their future together with guys early on in life. Therefore, if he already has the dad bod going on, girls can get used to it before they date, marry and have children.

3. Girls like to be the pretty one
Women love people to say ‘they look cute together.’ But they still like being the centre of attention. They want to look small and the bigger the guy, the smaller the girl feels and the better they look next to you in a picture.

The term has been well received with the growing pressure on men to spend hours in the gym to get buff or maintain their physique. Many men have been proudly posting pictures of their ‘dad bods’ on the beach, and there is even an instagram account praising the look (it’s worth following just for the captions!)
